Abstract: Drugs for the prevention and treatment of the novel coronavirus are still in the research and development phase, while nucleic acid detection methods and reagents remain critical measures in controlling the virus. Analyzing patents related to nucleic acid detection methods and reagents can help researchers leverage patent intelligence, enhancing their awareness of patent protection for scientific achievements. Based on data from the Novel Coronavirus Infection Prevention and Control Patent Information Sharing Platform, this study systematically organizes, filters, summarizes, and visualizes 175 patent applications specifically focused on nucleic acid detection and diagnosis of the novel coronavirus. It examines annual trends in application numbers, application types, and applicant information, with a particular emphasis on identifying key applicants' patent strategies and portfolio developments. The findings reveal that patent applications in the field of nucleic acid detection and diagnostics have been significantly influenced by the pandemic's progression; meanwhile, the field boasts a wide array of mature and well-developed detection methodologies. Moreover, Chinese universities and research institutions dominate as applicants, demonstrating high rates of commercializing their scientific breakthroughs into patents. Additionally, strategic patent portfolios have emerged as a deliberate move among leading applicants to safeguard intellectual property rights and bolster their competitive edge in the industry.
