Abstract: Drugs for the prevention and treatment of the novel coronavirus are still under development and clinical trials. Nucleic acid detection methods and reagents represent crucial measures in the prevention and control of the novel coronavirus. Analyzing patents related to nucleic acid detection methods and reagents can help researchers leverage patent intelligence and enhance their awareness of patent protection for scientific research outcomes. Based on the novel coronavirus infection prevention and control patent information-sharing platform, we have organized, screened, summarized, and visualized data from 175 patent applications related to nucleic acid detection and diagnosis of the novel coronavirus. We analyzed annual trends in application volumes, application types, and applicant information, with a particular focus on identifying key applicants’ patent application trends and strategic layouts. Our findings indicate that patent application activity in the field of nucleic acid detection and diagnosis has been significantly influenced by the evolution of the pandemic; numerous and relatively mature detection methods have emerged in this field; Chinese universities and research institutions dominate as applicants in this area, and the rate of commercialization of their research findings is high; furthermore, patent layout has become an intentional strategy employed by major applicants to protect their intellectual property rights and strengthen their competitive edge.
